Stuart Weitzman has made the press these past few days as it was announced that he would be stepping down as the creative director of ‘Elle’. Weitzman, creator of the label Elle, has been its director for nearly 30 years. On May 5, 2017, the artist will be retiring and will be replaced by Giovanni Morelli. Weitzman, the shoe designer, will stay on as the chairman of the company.
"In Giovanni, we have a found a creative director who will ensure that the unique DNA of the brand will be preserved while infusing his creative vision for a modern age," Weitzman said in a statement. "Giovanni is respected for his attention to detail, respect of quality and craftsmanship and for his modern sensibility that is always pushing new design boundaries."
Stuart Weitzman is an American designer and entrepreneur. He graduated from Domus Academy in Milan earning a Masters in Fashion Design. Right after this, he started his first job working for Prada. He then joined Burberry Accessories where he worked as Design Director for the following four years. Marc Jacobs and Chloe also feature in Weitzman´s curriculum.
Since March 2015, he had worked for Loewe as its leather goods designer. Today, Weitzman is renowned for being the designer of many celebrities’ favorite shoes on the red carpet. His shoes are sold in over 70 countries worldwide. His trademark has always been the use of unique materials, such as gold, vinyl, cork, Lucite, and wallpaper.
Stuart is well-known for some interesting milestones in the industry. In 2002 he designed a one-of-a-kind $1 million shoe for an Oscar nominee - a pair of platinum sandals with 464 diamonds used by actress Laura Harring.
The company that he founded has changed owners several times. In January, 2015 he sold it to Coach, with the condition that he stay as a shoe designer for the company.
